ABSTRACT

This article aims to analyze the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic in the context of the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre (RMPA), marked by the metropolitan characteristics of commuting, high population density and concentration of areas with a lack of urban infrastructure. The analysis goes from the disease dispersion process in the region to the behavior of the territorial and demographic characteristics of the RMPA. For this study, data on cases and deaths provided by the Rio Grande do Sul Health Department between March 2020 and April 2021 were used, and these were related to data on commuting by work provided by the IBGE, in order to understand the dispersion of Covid-19, since the association between the urban network and territorial dispersion of Covid-19 expresses the need to understand the relationships between mobility resulting from the work factor. In addition, through microdata from the IBGE Census, a relation between inequality in access to basic services and the spread of the disease was stablished. The research also identified the search for hospital services, the commuting to work and the lack of basic infrastructure in the homes as potential factors for agglomeration and greater spread of the disease. It also reveals the necessary integration between themes related to urban and regional planning and public policies as essential components in contexts of risks to public health.

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the spatial pattern of the territorial dispersion dynamics of Covid-19 in the Vales-RS region. With a qualitative approach and using secondary data collected from official agencies, from March 20 to July 17, 2020, related to the dispersion of the Covid-19 pandemic in the region, the article seeks to identify possible relationships between this dynamics and the structure and functioning of the regional urban network, with the economic structure and the territorial division of regional labor. In addition, intraregional spatial interactions led by the main economic and service centers in the Valleys region, the medium cities of Lajeado and Santa Cruz do Sul were considered. It was observed that the dynamics of territorial dispersion of Covid-19 in the Valleys region, in Rio Grande do Sul, presents characteristics similar to those observed in other regions and cities in Brazil and abroad, but it also reveals particularities among the sub-regions that constitute it, related to the uses of the territory.

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the spatial pattern of the dynamics of territorial dispersion of COVID-19 in the territory of the Vales (RS) region, identifying possible relations of such dynamics with the structure and functioning of the regional urban network, with the economic structure and the territorial division of regional labor, and with intraregional spatial interactions led by the medium-sized cities of Lajeado and Santa Cruz do Sul, the main economic and service centers of the Vales region. This article also analyzes the particularities, similarities, and specificities of the dynamics of the socio-spatial dispersion of the virus in the urban space of the medium-sized cities of Santa Cruz do Sul and Lajeado, correlating such dynamics with the sociodemographic and infrastructural characteristics existing in these two urban spaces. © 2020, Universidade de Taubate.
